South Florida Surf in October: “Blowtober” Returns

Summer Gear

October in South Florida marks the transition from the humid calm of summer to the unpredictable early-winter pattern that surfers have dubbed “Blowtober.” It’s a month where anything can happen—hurricanes, tropical lows, and early-season cold fronts all compete to stir up the Atlantic. For surfers, that means opportunity.

We keep a close eye on several ingredients this time of year. First are tropical systems—anything forming in the Western Atlantic or the Bahamas can quickly generate solid north or northeast swell that filters down into Palm Beach, Broward, and even Miami-Dade. Next are the early cold fronts, which start dipping into the state from the north. These can produce strong north or northwest winds behind the front, creating both local windswell and cleaner refraction swell as conditions calm. Finally, we track high-pressure systems settling over the Southeast U.S., since their clockwise flow often produces those steady northeast trades that can fill in fun surf for days.

This year, October looks poised for an active stretch. Long-range models suggest a mix of tropical energy and several cold fronts pushing through the Gulf and western Atlantic. Expect a few solid north pulses mid-month, lighter offshore mornings, and warm beach weather between systems. Water temps should hover near 82°F, and most days will still feel summery, but the first hints of that crisp fall air are coming.

For South Florida surfers, it’s officially time to wax up and watch the buoys—Blowtober is here.
