Deerfield Beach

Deerfield Beach, sitting on the northern edge of Broward County, has a completely different vibe compared to its local counterparts. Surfing is not a foreign language but rather a highlight of Deerfield’s culture. Anchored by the legendary Island Water Sports surf shop, surfers of all ages and skill levels fill the lineup on any given swell.

Deerfield benefits from a slightly larger swell window (by South Florida standards), consistent sandbars on both sides of the pier, and a handful of peaks to choose from depending on swell direction. The half-mile stretch south of the pier can offer some of the best surf in Broward when everything lines up. Strong cold fronts with a NW wind component, hurricane swells, and the elusive but magical ‘Providence Channel Gap swell” all light this place up.

If you surf near the coral-rock jetties on the south side during a real swell, use caution. Side-shore currents in that area can get deceptively strong — especially around higher tides — and can sweep you into the rocks faster than you’d expect. Be sure to pay for parking (plenty of options).
